Beraprost sodium is the organic sodium salt of beraprost, a synthetic analogue of prostacyclin (PGI2) used as an antihypertensive agent, platelet aggregation inhibitor, prostaglandin receptor agonist, vasodilator, and anti-inflammatory agent. It is employed in the treatment of chronic arterial occlusive disease and primary pulmonary hypertension in Japan and South Korea. Beraprost, the first chemically stable oral PGI2 analog, exhibits vasodilatory, antiplatelet, and cytoprotective effects. It is also being studied for avoiding reperfusion injury and addressing complications related to advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) in renal diseases. Despite its benefits, beraprost is not approved for use in the USA or Europe.
